Hotpoint Appliances

Why Choose Hotpoint?

Although Hotpoint may not be as well-known as similar brands in the industry, it has a solid presence with over 100 years of history. Hotpoint has led innovation with many of the different products and appliances it’s created in the past, which has caused its competitors to manufacture the same items.

Hotpoint is primarily known for its washers and dryers, which are known to be built tough to ensure they can hold up with heavy use. Not only is Hotpoint a leading brand among consumers in the U.S., but it’s now sold in various countries around the world as it continues to expand.

History

Hotpoint traces its origins back to the early 20th century. Today, they have a variety of products available to consumers and are known to deliver dependable performance with solid materials that hold up well to everyday use.

In 1918, Hotpoint was created when George A. Hughes and Earl Richardson joined together and merged their companies, which included the General Electric Company. The company achieved many firsts, including the first electric clothes dryer and the first low-speed agitation clothes washer.

Founding and Milestones

Hotpoint founder Earl H. Richardson

Hotpoint was founded in 1911 in California but had an interesting background before it was established as a company. The company began when George A. Hughes, a journalist from Iowa, and Earl Richardson, a meter reader from California, partnered together to start a company. Richardson originally invented a lightweight and more portable version of the electric iron, which he named Hotpoint. The product worked well for ironing small areas in-between buttons while pressing garments. The company began manufacturing irons in 1912, which launched its growth in the industry. Richardson continued to be innovative by creating an iron that would automatically turn off when it reached a specific temperature for added convenience and automation.

Hughes was also innovative and created the electric range, which transformed the way that people cook in the kitchen. The wires were set in clay bricks and had a simple design and would only stay hot for several hours while burning out.

In 1920, the company expanded rapidly as it moved into the British market after achieving success in the U.S.

By 1924, the electric range became available to the public and was redesigned to be white and fully enameled to ensure it looked modern and innovative in kitchens throughout the U.S. The company continued to invent new appliances and released the first electric clothes dryer in 1950.

By 1953, the company released a refrigerator with wheels, making it easy to move around the kitchen without any heavy lifting required. This also made it easier to clean behind it.

In 1961, Hotpoint became a leader in the industry by adding the first 90-Day Replacement Guarantee of Satisfaction with the Hotpoint appliance. This allowed unsatisfied customers to receive a replacement product at no additional cost, making it possible to protect their investment and have more confidence in their purchase. Other companies in the industry followed suit.

As the company continued to achieve success, Hotpoint began selling the first low-speed agitation clothes washer. This product proved to be revolutionary by making it possible to wash delicate clothes like cashmere sweaters, lingerie, and delicate lingerie in an appliance instead of washing the garments by hand.

Today, the company, which is jointly owned by Whirlpool and Haier, sells top-load washers, refrigerators and freezers, and cooking products that include ranges, microwave ovens, and vent hoods. Consumers can also shop for a variety of dishwasher models and air conditioners. The brand became part of the conglomerate through Haier’s purchase of GE Appliances in 2016.

Production and Manufacturing

There are a variety of different products that Hotpoint manufactures and offers to consumers to simplify everyday tasks. Hotpoint manufactures washers, electric dryers, gas dryers, and portable and stationary electric dryers to accommodate different consumers’ needs in all types of households. The dryers are not only easy to use but operate quietly and are equipped with multiple heat settings for different types of loads.

Products

The company manufactures a variety of different appliances that are sold in both the U.S. and the U.K. For over 110 years, the company has continued to add new models and products to its inventory to accommodate consumers.

Hotpoint washers and dryers are known to be built well because they’re American-made and have simpler designs, which reduce repairs that are often needed with more advanced appliances that have computer chips. The top-load washing machines are built with agitators to ensure they can remove dirt and stains with ease without causing any damage to the clothes. They also have specific settings for delicate loads to ensure fragile materials can be washed.

In the U.K., the current plant site that is still operating is located in Yate, which manufactures tumble dryers. The other appliances are manufactured in Poland and Italy. Prior to this, all of the company’s products were made at a factory in Llandudno Junction, in Conwy County Borough, North Wales, United Kingdom.

All of the Hotpoint refrigerators are made at the Peterborough factory in Poland and are distributed at Raunds.
