History

As a company that’s been around for over eight decades, Samsung has a long history of consistently pushing innovation and expanding into new markets. The founder didn’t have it easy when he started the company, but he pushed forward with his ideas.

Founding and Milestones

Lee Byung-chul started Samsung in 1938 as a trading company. Korea was under Japanese occupation at the time, and it wasn’t until 1945 that the Japanese occupation ended. Lee didn’t allow the war going on in his country to stop him. He expanded into other industries over the next 30 years since starting the company, including insurance, securities, textiles, food processing and retail.

It was in the late 1960s that Samsung started making electronics. In the mid-1970s, the brand got into construction and shipbuilding. When Lee died in 1987, the company was divided into five business groups: Samsung Group, CJ Group, Hansol Group, Shinsegae Group and Joongang Group.

Samsung Electronics invested a lot of money into research and development, which paid off well. It was the world’s largest consumer electronics maker, chipmaker and information technology company in 2017. The brand’s life insurance subsidiary was the world’s 14th largest life insurance company.

Samsung became a major international corporation in the 1990s. Its construction branch built Taipei 101 in Taiwan, Burj Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates and one of the two Petronas Towers in Malaysia. The brand’s mobile phones and semiconductors became popular in the ’90s as well. In 1993, Lee Kun-hee, the chairman of Samsung Group from 1987 to 2008, sold 10 subsidiaries to focus on three industries: electronics, chemicals and engineering. He reacquired the Sungkyunkwan University foundation in 1996.

Samsung has been manufacturing appliances for many decades. The brand’s first washing machine, Samsung Galaxy WM, was brought to market in 1974. It was a two-tub type of washer that washed clothes in one section and then spun them in the other section. A single-tub model that automatically washed and spun clothes was released in 1979.

Samsung was the first brand in South Korea to release a washing machine with a sanitize cycle: the High-Temperature WM SEW-60FX. In the ’90s, Samsung developed a washing machine technology it dubbed “Agipul.” This technology reduced damage to laundry, minimized tangled laundry and aimed to provide a hand-washed feel. Samsung was the leading brand of washers in South Korea at the time.

In 2008, Samsung introduced the Eco Bubble WM SEW-HAR149A, which reduced washing time, energy use and damage to clothing. It also enhanced wash quality. Another notable model that the brand released was the activ dualwash Washing Machine WA6700 in 2015. It featured a built-in pre-treatment sink, wobble technology that reduces tangles and a magic dispenser that efficiently dissolves detergent. We look forward to seeing what innovative technology Samsung comes out with next.

A popular product that Samsung offers is the 4.2-cubic-foot Front Load Washer with VRT Technology. It has a diamond drum that’s gentler on clothes. The washing machine also features Self Clean+ and Smart Care. Self Clean+ alerts you after 40 washes so that you can keep up with cleaning the drum. Smart Care is an app that troubleshoots your washing machine when it’s not working correctly. It offers solutions to the problem as well. The matching 7.5-cubic-foot Electric Dryer features Sensor Dry and nine preset drying cycles. It protects your clothes from heat damage by shutting off once they are dry.

Manufacturing

Samsung washer and dryer sets are made in South Korea and the U.S. Some of the brand’s front-load washers, however, are made in China. Samsung opened its U.S. factory for manufacturing home appliances in 2018 in Newberry County, SC. Thus, if you live in the U.S. and buy one of these appliances, it’s made in the U.S. The washer cabinets, bases and inner tubs of Samsung’s U.S. washing machines are made of blank steel.

Since the factory in South Carolina was opened, Samsung has expanded it to include an additional 151,000 square feet and two more manufacturing and assembly lines that have 20 presses and 30 injection molding machines. Over 800 full-time and contract workers are employed by the factory.

In celebration of opening their U.S. home appliance factory, Samsung donated 10 washing machines to Boys Farm and the Freedom and Hope Foundation, which are nonprofit organizations in Newberry County. One of Samsung’s inaugural washing machines was donated to the Newberry County museum as well. Boys Farm is a haven for boys who have difficult family situations. The Freedom and Hope Foundation provides recreational activities for retired wounded military service members and children who have life-threatening diseases.

Both front-load and top-load washers are made at the Newberry County factory. One production line is for front load and another is for top load. The workers can easily change which model they are manufacturing for the day within the product line. There is a customer satisfaction (CS) team at the manufacturing facility to handle quality control of the appliances. They ensure the incoming material sourced is of good quality and double-check the finished product before it goes to market.

There is also a quality management group to oversee the manufacturing process. They check that the correct procedures are being followed while manufacturing the appliances. The customer satisfaction team conducts transportation testing, too. They test the transportation of appliances to ensure they can handle the journey across the U.S. Potholes and the different types of climates in the U.S. are taken into consideration.
