If your Samsung washer is making a loud noise, you’re most likely to hear it when it’s in the agitation cycle. If this is the case, it is probable that the washer has a broken drive pulley. There’s also a good chance that the drum bearing is worn out. Most times, if it’s due to either of these causes, you will hear a grinding noise whenever the drum spins. You may also hear a rumbling noise.

What Are the Different Sounds That Washers Make?

A Samsung washer, even one that’s working fine, will make a lot of different sounds. Knowing the difference between normal sounds and those that present a problem can help you make the most of your washer. If it’s making a noise it isn’t supposed to make, you should stop using the washer immediately and have it serviced. Here’s a look at the different sounds Samsung washers make.

Rattling, Scratching, or Banging

Your washing machine is always going to make a noise when it’s spinning. However, if you notice a rattling or scratching noise, it’s possible that something like a button or coin has gotten into the filter. There’s also a chance that some foreign material has damaged the rubber seal. In some instances, a rattling or scratching noise simply indicates a piece of loose change that’s clanking against the inside of the drum.

Items can sometimes make their way past the seal that separates the drum from the washer’s casing. When this happens, the item will rattle around, as it is stuck between the casing and the drum. Keep in mind that it will rattle very fast, sometimes making a thudding and fast banging sound.

Clicking

If the water inlet valve is faulty or broken, it will usually cause your Samsung washer to make a clicking sound. A lot of people say that the clicking noise is a lot like what you hear when using an old movie projector. Why does the washer produce a clicking noise? Because the valves can rust or become clogged with lint or other debris. When this happens, the machine will not fill with water but makes a clicking noise instead.

Squealing or Whistling

Do you hear a noise as the washer fills up with water? If you hear a gentle rushing noise, this is normal. However, if the washer makes a squealing or whistling noise, you should stop the machine to investigate further. Squealing or whistling noises while the washer is filling up could indicate that the water pressure being too high.

Grinding

If you overload the drum on your Samsung washer, you will end up with a washer that makes a grinding noise. A grinding sound is also commonly heard in washers that aren’t sitting on a level floor or ground. If you happen to have a washer that gives you the reverse spin option, the grinding could be present when it reverses its direction (this is a grinding noise that you should not worry about).

The drum bearing in a washer supports the drum. It helps to ensure the drum stays in place as it rotates. When the bearing is damaged, this can result in the drum not rotating properly.

A grinding noise can also be the result of a faulty drive pulley. One of the easiest ways to tell if the grinding noise is coming from a worn-out drum bearing is to turn the machine off followed by manually rotating the drum. If you hear a grinding noise as you manually turn the drum, it’s likely that the drum bearing needs to be replaced.

What Can You Do When Your Samsung Washer Makes a Grinding Noise?

As said before, a washer grinding noise isn’t always something to be concerned about. However, there are several instances in which it is definitely an indication of something wrong with the washer.

To fix the washer grinding noise, start by removing the pulley from the washer. Then, inspect it for signs of wear.

The various signs that indicate wear and tear are:

  • Glazing
  • Cracks
  • TearsChips

If you notice any of these signs, make sure to replace the pulley, as this is the only way to stop the grinding noise. More importantly, it’s the only way to help deter additional wear and tear or damage to the pulley and the washer as a whole.

What to Do When the Washer Is Spinning Loud

If your washer is spinning loudly, it could be that it has a bad clutch. If this is the case, you will need to replace the clutch with a new one. It could also be that the loud noise stems from a worn-out belt. Generally, a belt is cheap and easy to replace. You order a replacement belt online from the washer’s manufacturer.

What to Do for a Washer That’s Making a Loud Noise

The best thing you can do when the washer is making a loud noise is to unplug it after you turn it off. Once it’s unplugged, check the seal on the door to make sure there are no coins or loose debris causing the noise. You’ll also want to check the filter to see if any foreign object has made its way into the filter. If you cannot determine what is making the noise, ask a professional to take care of the problem for you.

Fixing a loud washing machine isn’t something to experiment with. In fact, experimenting can be costly and dangerous. Unless you know what you’re doing, leaving the task in the hands of a professional can go a long way in helping you get the most out of your Samsung washer.
